Loading and unloading. - C o mprises a system of transferring coal or other mineral or substance from the underground workings of mines to the surface, in which handling of the coal is reduced to a minimum. Conveyers 5, working along or across the working face of the mine, deliver the coal to conveyers 2 fixed in the main roads. These conveyers transfer the coal into one or more downwardlysloping bins or hoppers 6 arranged beneath the floor level in wells 13 at the foot of the pit shaft. The cages 7 rest on the floor of the well beneath the discharge ends of the hopper 6, which are operated by an attendant on a platform 15. Stairs 14 permit access to the floor of the well. An attendant at the top of the shaft unloads the cages 7 into hoppers 9 delivering to side conveyers 10. The conveyers 10 deliver the coal to a transverse conveyer by which it is carried to screens or other appliances,
