An Improved Appliance for Raising Weights, by a Direct Winding Action and Lowering on a Combined Removable Band-brake Controlled Handle and Suspending same.
23,603. Stevenson, J., and Williams, O. R. Oct. 24. Winches.-A winch is provided with a detachable handle by which raising of the load is positively effected, and lowering is controlled by a brake arranged therein, the load remaining suspended when the handle is stationary or detached. The drum a has a ratchet-wheel d engaged by a pawl g pivoted in the casing and capable of being thrown out of action by a cam-piece e carried by a loose collar e1 engaging a curved member g1 integral therewith. The handle i has two collars i1, i2 forming bearings for a spindle k positively engaging the winding-drum; the collar is locked to the collar e1 by a bayonet-joint. A brake pulley j is loosely mounted on the spindle k, around which passes a strap l normally applied by a spring n through a lever. i3. The drum j is integral with a ratchet o engaged by a spring pawl p which can be thrown out by a lever q. In operation, the load is normally suspended by the ratchet d and pawl g. On rotating the handle i in a clockwise direction, the drum a and collar e1 move together, the pawl g being raised from the ratchet d during a part of each revolution and riding over the ratchet during the remainder. When lowering, the handle i is turned to release the pawl g by the cam e, the lever q is operated to release the pawl p, and the tension in the strap l is relieved by the handle on the lever i3 so as to control the descent. To stop lowering, the handle i is turned to bring the pawl g again into operation. The handle is applicable to any similar winch.
