7776. Acheson, E. G. Dec. 31, 1906, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Carbon.-Amorphous bodies such as graphite, lamp-black, precipitated alumina, siloxicon and amorphous carbide of silicon, are disintegrated and " deflocculated " by mixing them with a solution having effects thereon similar to tannin, and grinding the mass, the " deflocculated " particles' being afterwards separated by decantation. The powdered material is moistened with a solution of gallotanic acid, catechu, extract of straw, or the like and the mass worked in a mortar or pug-mill and afterwards ground in any suitable mill. When a specially pure, fine, and uniform product is desired, the ground material is diluted with water or other liquid and the fine disintegrated particles floated off. The disintegrated and deflocculated" particles may be recovered from the liquid by adding a flocculating agent, such as muriatic acid or a solution of alum, which causes them to flocculate and settle ; in this manner amorphous bodies may be separated from crystalline and other bodies. The disintegrated amorphous bodies may be dried and moulded into articles with or without the aid of heat, and will remain suspended in water so that they can be used as lubricants.
