Systems of house drainage; disinfecting; intercepting-tanks and catchpits ; traps.-Each house is fitted with an apparatus u in which the liquid and solids are separated and disinfected. The liquids pass, under gravity, through pipes 42, 43 to a tank o in an intermediate pit j, whence they are removed by a pump l, operated by an electric motor k. They pass through the pipe 35 to a tank g at the works and are sterilized and discharged, for example into a river. The solids are withdrawn from the apparatus u through the pipes 41 to a tank n, in which a vacuum is obtained, when required, by means of air-pumps e, connected to tanks fat the works and thence by the pipe 35 with the tank n. The solids in the tank n are forced by the pump l through the pipe 38 to one or other of the reservoirs t in a central pit p. A pump s, actuated by an electric motor r, finally passes them through the pipe 35 to the reservoirs f for reduction to manure. The works are provided with steam engines b, dynamos c, and a distributing board d, and the pits p, j have distributing boards q, m. A pump h supplies a disinfecting-liquid under pressure to a reservoir i connected by pipes 34 with the apparatus u, the construction of which is shown in Fig. 2. The sewage enters by the pipe w into the interior of a strainer grating formed by trapezoidal bars 6. The liquid passing through the grating rises in the compartment 1 and overflows through the outlet 26. When a sufficient accumulation of solids has been formed in the compartment 2, the disinfectant liquid is admitted into a cylinder 4 above a piston 11, Fig. 4, which is forced down against the pressure of a spring 25. A plate 7, provided with teeth having the same form as the interstices between the grating bars, is connected by a rod 10 to the piston, and is lowered by the piston to make a joint with a washer 9 and shut off the compartment 2. The solids are then withdrawn by the vacuum through the balanced valve 29, air being admitted through a socket 27. A shutter 44 is attached to the plate 7 and closes the pipe w when the plate is lowered. After discharge of the solids the pressure of the disinfectant is released and the piston 11 raised by the spring 25. The plate 7 is surmounted by a tube 21 with stuffing-box 22 through which passes a rod 23. The upward movement of the plate raises the rod 23 and, by means of it, the double valve 14,141, thus shutting off the connexion with the pipe 34 and opening a way for the disinfectant in the space above the piston 11 to pass into the compartment 1. It is stated that a portion of the disinfectant leaves the compartment 1 through the outlet 26 and passes by the pipes 42, 43 to the reservoirs o, n. After a further rise of the plate 7, a rod 16 on the piston 11 operates a lever 18 and lowers the valve 14, 14', thus re-setting the apparatus for a further series of operations.
