Forced-draught furnaces; dampers.- Ordinary steam boilers are provided with means by which combustion in the furnace is conducted under pressure maintained throughout the combustion chamber and smoke-tubes. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to a marine boiler. The front of the furnace and ash-pit is closed, compressed air being supplied through a pipe i and air-beating passages h in the furnace front to the ash-pit. The smoke-tubes discharge into a box or casing k enclosed at the front by a hinged plate m, to the bottom of which is hinged a counterweighted flap o. Instead of a counterweight, a spring or other suitable device may be used. The flap o closes the outlet of the casing k and opens more or less according to the rise or fall of pressure. A mixture of oil vapour or the like may be supplied with the compressed air.
