Engraving.-Relates to improvements in the design-stamping machines described in Specification No. 14,709, A.D. 1900, and consists in providing a cutting-tool instead of or in addition to a punch, better to adapt the machine for producing varying gradations of light and shade on rollers, dies, &c. described in Specifications Nos. 6149 and 6150, A.D. 1907. A bracket E provided with a pivoted arm B is supported in a socket on the movable bed of the machine either instead of or in addition to the punch bracket. In the arm B is mounted a drill A which is driven by gearing a1 and a sbaft a2 provided with two universal joints from a bevel-wheel m on an intermittently-operated shaft M. The shaft M is driven in one direction by a rack N which abuts against one arm of a bellcrank P', the other arm p of which engages a bar which is depressed by a treadle to lower the drill A to the work, and in the other direction by a spiral spring P. The arm B is provided with a sliding weight C which is connected by a radius rod d', jointed link d, and springs g4 to a rod D, by which the operator determines the position of the weight C and the pressure on the cutter A, as described in Specification No. 6150, A.D. 1907. The cutter A may be provided with ball bearings and may be driven by means of a free-wheel clutch.
