Box making machines.-Relates to machines for applying an adhesive to sheets of paper and analogous material and attaching such sheets to various articles, and more particularly to machines for affixing flies to paper boxes. The flies M are piled in a pack on the bed C of the machine, the front of the pack resting against the spring fingers C3 and the sheets being kept in position by a counterweight D. Above the pack and moving in vertical guides is the paste trough E, which is perforated at the bottom so that paste can flow on to the margin of the topmost fly-sheet. The paste trough carries a roller E7 connected by links to the sliding follower E2. When the trough is lowered on to the pile of flies by depressing a treadle, the follower first meets the pack and causes a lifting of the roller E7, thus permitting the flow of paste to the flies. On the treadle being released, a counterweight returns the paste trough to its original position. The top sheet being thus pasted, the bed is forced forward by depressing a second treadle, and the edge of the box N is applied to the fly, the two being pressed together and the spreading of the gum effected by the lowering of the presser F, which has a counterweight and is also operated by the second treadle. The treadles are connected to the parts which they actuate by cords passing over suitable pulleys. The edge of the bed C has a series of indentations to receive and guide one edge of the box N, so that boxes of various sizes may be fitted with flies. To adapt the pasting-trough E to suit different sizes of fly-sheets, the effective length of the pasting line may be lessened by the interposition of a thin gate or slide between the roller E7 and the bottom of the trough.
