23,604. Boult, A. J., [Gaff, T. T.]. Oct. 25. Mills and apparatus.- Relates to apparatus for removing the germ from Indian corn or maize, and especially to the inventions described in Specifications No. 16,560, A.D. 1902, and No. 8666, A.D. 1903. The maize is treated by a rotary cylinder within a fixed casing A1, Fig. 1, mounted on a suitable stand. Thecylinder and casing or concave are both built up in sections tapering towards the discharge spout K, the concave being adjustable in an horizontal direction. The external surface of the cylinder is screw-threaded, Fig. 15, the threads diminishing in height towards the discharge end and having low pyramidal projections interspersed among them. The concave is provided with small countersunk holes b, Fig. 12, to remove the grain, and projections p similar to those on the cylinder. The moistened maize is fed through the hopper H, the feed being regulated. By the action of the cylinder and the concave, the grains are subjected to an increasing pressure as they pass along inside the concave, the broken grains passing out into receivers through the holes b and the unbroken grains passing on to the discharge spout K, in which means are provided to break up the compact mass as it is discharged. If the grains become too brittle, additional moisture may be supplied to them through the concave, as described in Specification No. 8666, A.D. 1903.
