Pianofortes ; instruments with sonorous strings.- In a tuning-appliance for pianofortes and other stringed instruments, the wrest-pin has a toothed collar which engages teeth on a collar fitting in the wrest-board, and the wedging action of a tapered pin or screw is utilized for making fine adjustments. A pin b is attached to the wrestpin a and engages a notch in a toothed collar. Several notches may te provided to facilitate preliminary tuning. The collar c has a projection d which fits in a slightly larger depression in the wrest-board f, so that by depressing the tapered pin or screw e the wrest-pin a and collar c are caused to rotate slightly against the tension of the string. If a taper screw is used, the sides of the slot and projection have suitable screw-threads. The wrest-pin plate, if used without a wrestplank, is provided with projections to form supports for the pins. In a modification the wrest-pin is made hollow and placed over the movable bearing and its fixed support. According to the Provisional Specification, a device may be added to fix the pin rigidly to the movable bearing and the bearing to its fixed support, and the wrest-pin plate and wrest-pin may be made of iron, steel, brass, or aluminium, the former being cast in one piece with the frame.
