Brakes.-An emergency brake for tramcars and road vehicles is arranged, when used on tramcars, to be applied either to the rails or track from either or both ends of the vehicle. The renewable serrated blocks D, Fig. 1, are applied to the rails, and are carried by bell-crank levers A pivoting on shafts C, which may be the inner axles of a double bogie car, or separate shafts carried in bearings R from the vehicle. The levers A at opposite sides of the car are connected by cross-shafts G, and at the middle of these shafts is coupled a sliding shaft J, which may be moved longitudinally from each end of the car through links K, L and hand-levers N, which move over disk-plates M on which locking-means are provided. The bell-crank levers have rollers E to prevent the brakes from being tco severely pressed on to the track or rails ; they are mounted in reverse positions at each end of the vehicle so that when one pair is applied the other pair is raised. The shoe 4, Fig. 3, at each side of a road vehicle is carried by a lever Z, mounted in a bracket 2 on the axle 3 of the vehicle.
