Gilding and silvering.-Gold or silver is precipitated from colloidal solutions by an electrolyte, and the moist precipitate thus obtained is applied in thin layers with a suitable agglomerant to the surface to be treated and is then dried and polished. The colloidal solutions are obtained by the action of highly-molecular carbohydrates, such as dextrin, on alkaline solutions of soluble salts, and in the case of gold, a reducing-agent such as formaldehyde is added before precipitation.
