23,140. Morison, D. B. Oct. 19. Air-pumps, steam-engine.- A condenser system comprises a receiver r wherein is maintained a vacuum approximating closely to or in excess of that in the condenser c, a pump g withdrawing water of condensation from the condenser and discharging the same into the receiver, and means such as pumps k, k1 for withdrawing water with or without air and vapour from the receiver. According to one arrangement, the receiver r is placed in an elevated position, thus providing a head of water adapted to ensure the satisfactory working of the pump k discharging water. The air and vapour may be withdrawn from the condenser by a separate air pump, the requisite pressure in the receiver being obtained by connecting it with the condenser. The air and vapours may also be withdrawn from the condenser by a steam jet s and discharged through a pipe a' to the receiver. In this case the steam is condensed in the receiver by means of the water from the pump g. When the receiver is used in this way solely as a supplementary condenser, the receiver need not be in an elevated position, the water, air, and vapours being withdrawn together by a wet air - pump k1. A cooler may be provided, for instance, in the base of the condenser, to cool the condensed water which is to be discharged into the receiver r. The pump k may discharge into an ejector serving as an air pump, as described in Specification No. 16,358, A.D. 1908, part of the water being returned by way of an open tank to the cooler for further use in the system. The head of pressure to which the water thus returned is subjected may be utilized in a water-jet pump which may serve as auxiliary to or in place of the pump g. Specification No. 840, A.D. 1902, [Abridgment Class Steam engines], is referred to.
