125. Offenbacher, E. Jan. 2, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Surfacing and polishing.- Relates to a machine which may be used for polishing both the bevel edges and the flat surfaces of glass plates. The tools, which are fixed when the machine is employed for polishing bevels and are mounted on rotary spindles when flat surfaces are being polished, are carried by a bar, which has imparted to it two independent reciprocatory movements at rightangles to one another, The table may also have a reciprocatory movement imparted to it when the machine is used for polishing plane surfaces. The tools are secured to a bar 2, Fig. 4, which is carried in guides on pillars 8, and is reciprocated across the table 7, on which the work rests, by a crank 4 and connecting-rod 3. The bar 2 is given an additional reciprocation in a direction at right-angles by eccentrics 6 on vertical shafts 9, which are driven by chain gearing from a countershaft, which is in turn driven from the main shaft 10. In the modified form of apparatus shown in Figs. 9 and 11, the table 7 is supported on adjustable rollers 21, and may be reciprocated by a crank 23 and connecting- rod 24. The tools, which may be in the form of fixed blocks 42 or rotary disks 16, are carried by the bar 2 and are reciprocated by the crank 4 and connecting-rod 3. The reciprocation in the other direction is imparted by eccentrics 9, which operate in slots 18 in the bar 2. When it is intended to polish bevels, the motion of the table is scopped, and the fixed tools are used. When it is intended to polish surfaces, the table is reciprocated, and the rotary tools 16 are used, their rotation being brought about by friction or in any suitable manner. The glass plates are held upon the table 7 when the bevel is being polished by clamps 59, Fig. 17, carried by screwed spindles 56, supported by the beam 55 and adjusted by band-wheels 57. The fixed tools 42, Fig. 20, are supported from brackets 39 secured to the beam 2. The tool support 1 is mounted upon a spindle 35, the flat ends of which pass through slots 38 in the brackets 39. the inclination of the tools may be altered by a screw 41 passing through a fixed bracket 40 engaging a stop 42 on the tool support. The ends of the spindle 35 are connected by links 46 to eccentrics 49 on a spindle 50, which may be rotated by a handle to raise the tool.
