Tyres, pneumatic.-In apparatus for detecting punctures in tyres, and for like purposes, of the kind in which an inflator is provided with an extension or chamber containing smoke-producing combustibles, the chamber is provided with a lining of non-conducting material to prevent injury to the hand when the chamber is used as a grip during inflation. Fig. 1 shows a detachable extension providing a chamber in which a smoke-producing cartridge i is placed. An annular lining h of asbestos or other non-conductor of heat is located between the outer casing a and a metal liner g. Screw-threaded detachable caps b, c with milled or nut-shaped heads are adapted, respectively, to screw into the head of the inflator and to receive the flexible-tube connexion. The cartridge may be made by enclosing a suitable compound in brown paper saturated with a solution of saltpetre. The casing may be covered with felt, asbestos cloth, or other heat-insulating material for additional safety. The cap c is provided with a gauze screen f for preventing particles of the combustible from being forced into the tyre. In a modification, in which the casing is integral with the inflator, the cap b is replaced by a perforated plug which is secured to the wall of the inflator. The metal liner may be dispensed with. Extensions as above may be applied to foot-pumps with stirrups including those having delivery nozzles at the side. According to the Provisional Specification, the casing a may be adapted to contain the delivery valve of the inflator, and may be fitted with a lining of fireclay provided with lugs so as to form on air-jacket for heat-insulating purposes.
