Gas and like engines.-Relates to apparatus of: the kind in which the exhaust gases are passed into a cooling and purifying chamber before being delivered into a pneumatic tyre or other receptacle to be inflated or charged, and consists in providing the purifying-chamber with a moistened partition, or partitions, of earthenware, textile fabric, or other porous substance, through which the gases are caused to flow. The gases from the engine B are passed into a purifier C consisting of a closed vessel provided with a downwardly-extended inlet pipe H closed at its lower end and surrounded by an inverted hood I of textile material of the character of a lamp-wick. The gases pass through perforations h in the tube and then outwards through the textile material, which is maintained in a moistened condition by capillarity: The connexion to the engine may be effected in any convenient manner; thus a T or Y pipe D may be inserted in the place of the ordinary sparking-plug and adapted to carry a sparking-plug in one of its arms. A non return valve F, which can be put out of action by a hand screw, is provided at some point. In a modification, the hand-screw is suppressed, and a stop-cock is provided in the pipe A adjacent to the purifier. The cleaned gases may be adapted to operate compressed gas apparatus, whistles, and sirens.
