19,251. Varicas, C. J. Sept. 14. Compound-air engines. - Relates to mechanism of the kind in which a small initial i m - pulse brings into action a comparatively large amount of power; the mechanism is adapted to operate the distributing-valves of the compressed-air servo-motor or steering-engine controlling the steering-mechanism of locomotive torpedoes, and is especially applicable to gyroscopic steering-mechanism such as that described in Specification No. 22,296, A.D. 1894, Abridgment Class Ammunition &c.]. As applied to locomotive torpedoes, a cylinder H, Fig. 2, is provided with a piston T, ports, shown in dotted lines, communicating with the main distributing- valve, of the semi-rotary type, and an exhaust port G. A series of collars on the piston T forms a rack engaging teeth F on the spindle I of the distributing-valve. A disk D, Fig. 1, on the spindle I carries two pins Q adapted to engage a spring E ; the spindle I also carries a radial arm provided with a roller B which engages one or other of two pivoted spring - controlled detents t. Stops U prevent inward motion of the detents. The pivoted arm P, which is controlled by the gyroscope, acts upon pins 0 carried by the detents. In operation, assuming the parts to be in the position shown in Fig. 1, and that the gyroscope pulls the arm P in a clockwise direction, the right-hand detent t is oscillated outwards, the roller B and supporting-arm move in a counter-clockwise direction, thus moving the distributing - valve and admitting exhaust motive fluid from the main cylinder to the cylinder H. The piston T is thereby moved to the right, and the spindle I is further rotated thus bringing the distributing-valve into position to admit motive fluid to the opposite end of the main cylinder, and leaving the left-hand end of the cylinder H open to the exhaust passage G. The roller B comes to rest beneath the left-hand detent t.
