24,130. Strauss, A. Nov. 10. Piles; dams; water supply.-Piles of type described in Specification No. 27,259, A.D. 1904, which have thickened portions penetrating laterally into and compressing loose earth, are used in obtaining a water-tight vertical wall or layer in dams, dykes, &c., for altering the natural courses of springs, d for consolidating building-ground. A loose permeable layer 2 in the dam shown in Fig. 1, is rendered water-tight by the compressing effect of the projections 4 on the piles 3, the piles being placed in one or more rows sufficiently close together having regard to the nature of the ground. For altering water courses, piles are placed in concentric rows so that the water is bound to come to the surface. As shown in Fig. 2, piles 8 are driven into the building-ground 7 around the foundation walls 5, 6 of a building, whereby the loose places in the ground are compressed by the projections 9 and the foundation is made more secure.
