Recording signals.-A mechanism is added to the apparatus described in Specification No. 12,965, A.D. 1900, [Abridgment Class Registering &c,], for the purpose of recording on the same paper strip as therein used the state of each signal passed by the train. The apparatus is operated from a shaft u driven from an axle, and is controlled by a polarized electro-magnet and marks by transverse lines across a continuous record line the state of the signal. Two polarized electromagnets are energized from a track conductor in conjunction with the track signal so that one or other of the armatures w, w1 is released according to the direction of current from the track conductor. The pin on the armature w, w1 rocks the lever k, k1 so that one end engages the corresponding disk l, m, on the spindle n, and at the same time the movement of the armature causes the release of the detent v from the disk o, whereby the pawl-carrying member r is thrown into engagement with the cam t on the spindle u and the pawl q is released to drive the spindle n. The disk l, m causes the lever k, k1 to oscillate, and through pivoted links lifts or depresses the pencil from its normal position several times so as to make a distinct mark on the paper.
