Chaff-cutters; cutting and slicing roots &c.- In a machine for cutting chaff, roots, &c. the materials are fed from a hopper to a pair of feed-rollers B, C superimposed upon an horizontally-rotating set of knives H ; one roller B is larger than the other and is adapted to be drawn out of gear when the machine is used as a root-cutter. The roller B is mounted in bearings D, which slide in slots D1, and are attached to arms G having projections G1 also sliding in slots D'. The outer ends of the arms G are connected to springs E which are unhooked when the roller B is drawn out of gear. The knife frame H is mounted in a casing Q, and vertically-adjustable shields 0 are mounted between the knife blades. A curved wiper R, mounted under the frame H, conveys the cut material through an opening in the casing Q. To adjust the thickness of the cut, two differently-pitched worms, which drive the rollers B, C, are fitted on a reversible sleeve mounted on the driving-shaft. To enable the machine to cut pumpkins and larger roots, a grid F with sharpened edges is fixed in the upper part of the hopper ; the roots are pressed through the grid and cut up before being fed to the knife frame H.
