22, 115. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, G. T. Sept. 28. Mountings.-Relates to elevating and loading gear of the kind in which elevating and loading pinions, operated by independent wormgears from opposite sides of the mounting, engage with a segmental rack. The invention consists in arranging the pinions so that they engage with the outer periphery of the rack. The elevating and loading-gear pinions eÎ, fÎ, Fig. 1, both engage with teeth on the outside of a segmental rack A1 loosely mounted on the trunnion C. The elevating-gear pinion eÎ is mounted on a side bar Dx of the carriage D, and is rotated by hand-gear E1Î connected by a shaft e with the gearing E', E. The loading- gear pinion fÎ is mounted on a saddle A1Î, Fig. 3, attached to the cradle B, and is rotated by hand-gear F1Î, Fig. 4, which is mounted in a casing f2, carried on one of the trunnions, and which operates upon worm-gearing F, F1, Fig. 3. The gun is elevated by moving the segmental rack A' which is locked to the cradle by the worm-gearing F, F1; but, when the gun is to be brought quickly to the loading position, the rack A' being fixed by the worm-gearing E, E', the rotation of the pinion fÎ causes the cradle to move relatively to the rack, the return of the gun to the correct elevation being assured by the engagement of a face a2 on the saddle A1Î with a face a1 on the segmental rack. The sights are carried on a trunnion sleeve a forming part of the segmental rack, so that they do not change their elevation during the loading movement.
