Insulators capable of standing considerable tensional strain and also extra high voltages. such as are experienced in wireless-telegraphy systems, are constructed with one or more ebonite or like hoods connected together with flexible insulated rope. The rope a, as shown in Fig. 3, consists of iron or steel wire, or yarn folded over and over so as to form a skein of the requisite length ; the skein is then seized, loops B being left at each end for iron thimbles C, and the whole is covered with rubber and vulcanized. As shown in Fig. 1, the hood D is formed when in the plastic condition around the rope A, and the hood and rope are vulcanized together ; a shackle F is secured to the hood, and the enlarged head E on the hood enables the ebonite to take the strain, in compression.
