Balancing on axle.-In order to regulate the weight on the horse's back, the axle of a cart or other road vehicle is secured to blocks having dovetailed grooves adapted to slide over correspondingly shaped plates on the vehicle, the blocks being connected by rods and levers to a nut which is traversed along a longitudinal screw operated through gearing from a handwheel at the side of the vehicle. The blocks 1, 2 are connected by rods 9 to levers 11 pivoted at 13 to brackets on the bottom of the cart at the rear. The inner ends of the levers are connected by rods 15 to a nut 17 on a screwed shaft 18, which is turned by bevel gear 20, 21 operated from a hand-wheel 26 through reducing-gear 23, 24. The gear 23, 24 may be omitted, and the wheel 26 mounted on an extension of the shaft 22 of the bevel-wheel 21.
