Piles.-Foundations in unstable ground are made by sinking pits to the required depth, throwing in pebbles, sand. beton, or the like, and stamping so that the material spreads downwardly and laterally. This operation is repeated until a continuous layer of the desired resistance is obtained. If the ground be very unstable, the material from adjacent pits may meet. The pits are filled with concrete or the like to carry the building. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 9945/04, 13,819/07, and 24,130/08.
