A Method of and Apparatus for Sorting Deals, Battens, Boards or like Commodities according to Length.

Sorting on interrupted shoots; sorting by passing through graduated apertures.-Deals, battens, boards, &c. are sorted according to their length by causing them to travel along a conveyer or shoot in which are successive gaps of different lengths at suitable distances from each other. The rope or chain b travels between parallel side beams a and is supported by rollers d so as to be at a lower level than the upper surface of the beams. The rope passes over an anchored pulley c at one end of the conveyer and over the drum of a winding-engine at the other end of the conveyer. Guide-pulleys or a narrow board or rail e may support the rope in the gaps between the rollers. Pulleys may be used instead of rollers, and the gaps may be defined by transverse bars. An idle roller may be provided above each roller d immediately in front of each gap to prevent the deals &c. from tilting until they are clear of the rollers. The rollers d may be driven independently of the rope b. The rope may be dispensed with and the conveyer inclined so that the articles will travel down by gravity on the rollers until they arrive at the gaps corresponding to their lengths.
