Electrical systems, automatic; track apparatus actuating signals on trains.-Each train carries a battery and alarm or train-stopping gear in series with a pair of contact rollers which run upon parallel conductors placed by the side of the track rails. The conductors and track rails are divided into blocks. When a train enters a block, the conductors meeting at the next junction ahead are connected. If two trains enter blocks having the conductors electrically connected, the train circuits are united and the two batteries co-operate to give the alarm. A switch, as shown in Fig. 4, is placed at each junction of the conductors. When a train enters a section, a wheel depresses a lever 26, momentarily closing at contacts 27, 28 the circuit of a magnet 22 in the switch at the next junction ahead. This magnet attracts its armature 23 and closes contacts 24, 25, thereby connecting the conductors at the junction. The armature 23 is locked, with the contacts 24, 25 together, by a plate 30. When the train reaches this junction, it depresses the lever 26, releases the armature 23 in the same box, and excites the armature 23 at the next junction ahead. The train-stopping devices are operated by a spring piston which is normally held, with the spring compressed, by a catch. When a train receives a signalling-current, an electromagnet is excited, its armature removes the catch, and the piston is released.
