Retting.-In a process for de-gumming vegetable substances such as flax, hemp, jute, phormium, china-grass, alfa or esparto-grass, vegetable hair, barks of mulberry and linden trees &c., and for the preparation of paper pulp from straw, wood, bamboo, reeds, canes, vinewood, cocoa-nut fibre, rags, old bags, cordage, and similar materials, and for degreasing wool and other animal fibres, the material is boiled under pressure at 248‹-356‹ F. for from two to six hours in water to which has been added a quantity of hydrocarbon equal to at least 5 per cent. of the weight of the material under treatment.
