Improved Method of and Means for Removing Vegetable Impurities from Woollen Rags, Wool and other Animal Fibres.

15,729. Roberts, S., and Crossley, J. H. July 15. Carbonizing rags and fibres. - The object is to reduce the time of treatment, the cost in acids, and the length of the process. The material is moved through the acidulated liquid and agitated by an apparatus comprising forks b resembling those used in a "McNaught's "wool washing machine," and is automatically delivered from the bath to squeezing-rollers and thence either to a second bath or to a drying-apparatus such as that shown in Fig. 2. The drying-apparatus may consist of a series of travelling aprons arranged in a chamber through which hot air is passed, or the material may be carried along a trunk or tube by means of a current of hot air. The material is finally subjected to the action of a suitable shaking-machine for the separation of the vegetable impurities. By the use of this invention, the ordinary neutralizing-bath is dispensed with, and, when treating " Russian stockings," the strength of the acid solution may be reduced to 50 per cent. and the time of the acid treatment to 15 minutes, and, when treating wool noils, a 10 per cent. acid solution may be used and the time of treatment is about seven minutes. Also, if the material to be carbonized contains silk, the latter falls away therefrom with the cotton &c.
