Magnifying - appliances. - An apparatus for examining gems &c. consists of a lens l mounted in an adjustable stand, to the foot of which is attached a ring a within which is a ring b capable of rotation about a diameter by means of the handle g. Within the ring b are three spring claws k adapted to hold the gem &c. at the centre of the ring, these claws being held by studs i and having arms e bearing against the edge of the ring b. The claws are actuated by pins d on a ring c, which can be rotated within the ring b by means of a handle h.
