12,076. Linotype & Machinery, Ltd., and Wood, F. W. May 19. Inking - apparatus. - E n - graved plates or dies are wiped by a series of pads flexibly connected together. As shown, the pads 1 are of inking-roller or like composition cast in suitable removable trays 2 attached to plates 3 pivoted at 5 to a chain 4, which is preferably intermittently actuated to bring successive pads into the operative position at the top of the apparatus. A cleaning-band 19 and a drying-band 23 may be applied at suitable positions to the pads. The pads 1 preferably have bevelled edges, and are held in place by corrugations &c. in the trays. The pads, plates, and trays may be in two parts hingedly connected. Suitable guide rails 8, flanges 18, and shoes 17 are provided to guide the pads in their movement, which m a y be obtained through a reciprocating rack 10, ratchet and other gears 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 driving one of the sprocket wheels 7. Suitable locking- devices may hold the pad in position while the wiping-operation is carried out. The band 19 is preferably partly immersed in cleansing-solution such as paraffin. Both bands 19, 23 may be driven in a direction opposite to the travel of the pads, and may clean the pads either while they are stationary or moving. Rollers may be used instead of bands.
