24,200. Coulter, W., and Bridge, R. Nov. 1. Coating webs.-Relates to a process and apparatus for vulcanizing and finishing rubberproofed textures. The fabric a on leaving the usual spreading-machine is placed in an outer cooling-chamber b, where it is passed over guiderollers c in conjunction with a doctor d for controlling the amount of farina to be applied. It is then passed into a separate room i1, where it is drawn over a steam - chest e to remove excess of naphtha, through a brushing or finishing chamber i and also through a chamber k heated by steam-chests e and m and closed by pivoted flaps. In this chamber the fabric is partly cured by means of fumes generated from sulphur chloride. The fabric then passes into the chamber b and is batched upon a roller o. When cool, it may be printed or may be subjected to the second portion of the process. For this purpose the fabric is passed over a roller p, revolving in vulcanizing liquid contained in a tank q, which is supplied and raised and lowered in guides r from outside the room to protect the operator from the fumes. As the fabric passes below the steam-chest m, the fumes generated are drawn off by means of a fan &c. t. It is again passed through the brushing-box i and heated chamber k, where it is treated with the fumes of a deodorant, such as ammonia, and is finally batched in the room b. The sulphurous fumes in the vulcanizing- chamber may be neutralized by allowing ammonia fumes to escape from the chamber k. In place of employing the heating-chamber k, the fabric may be passed in sinuous form through an ordinary dry heat stove, the vulcanizing compound being first mixed with the rubber. Specification 27,289/10 is referred to.
