Wharves, piers, and jetties; piles, driving. - In the construction of piled wharves, jetties, &c., two or more rows of piles are driven by means of piledrivers forming part of a travelling tower, which, by means of temporary rails attached to the piles already driven, advances over their heads and, overhanging them, places a fresh cross-row of piles in position. The travelling tower may comprise a pile-driver AB and operating-means therefor, pile-guides L, a lifting-crane E adapted to lift the piles by the head and place them in the guides, and a supplementary crane F for picking up the lower end of the pile until it is vertically suspended from the crane F. The apparatus may be backed to drive intermediate piles and the pile-driving mechanism may be in multiple in order to drive two or more piles simultaneously. The platform of the pile-driver may be carried upon two swivelling bogies or upon a non-swivelling front support and a swivelling and traversing back support for constructing curved lines of piling.
