Computing-scales.-In apparatus comprising two or more longitudinally movable or rotary members and adapted for use in converting sums or currencies, measurements of length, weight, &c., from one system into another, one member is graduated in sub-divisions of the unit of one system and has an adjacent scale graduated in terms of the difference between the units of the two systems, while the other is graduated as usual in terms of the second unit. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the member A is divided between a and b so as to represent the sub-divisions of one shilling, while the main divisions between a and c represent the differences between the shilling and the franc in the scale adopted. The member B is graduated in francs and sub-divisions thereof. The computing-scale as set in the Figure gives the corresponding values of two shillings and any number of pence in francs, but two must be added to the result shown in the scale B. Thus 2s. 1d. is equivalent to (0.60 + 2), or 2.60 francs. In Fig. 2 is shown a circular computing-scale for converting, in a similar manner, measurements expressed in the standard carat into equivalents in the metrical system of carats. In another form (not shown), the rule is adapted for the conversion of French and English measurements of length.
