Overwinding, preventing; emergency power cut-off gear.-In apparatus for preventing overwinding and overspeeding of winding- engines &c., a slowlyrotating toothed disk a o r a longitudinallymoving slide is provided with adjustable end sections a3 having teeth of gradually-increasing height, which, if the engine speed is excessive, engage the free end of an arm b moving up and down with the sleeve of the governor d. The disk is driven so as to make rather less than one revolution per wind. When the arm b is rocked in either direction by engaging the disk, a linkage e, f, g is operated, so as to rotate a rectangular block secured to an arm h. This block spreads the spring suspending-arms i and allows a weighted lever j1 to rock a shaft j2. An arm on the shaft j2 actuates the throttle valve through a slotted link, and a second arm on the shaft opens the admission valve on the steam brake cylinder. In a modified form of trip gear shown in Fig. 4, the link e actuates a three-armed lever r2, which, when rocked in either direction, engages and lifts pins s8 on a slide s, thereby releasing the weighted lever j1. A suitable form of steam brake comprises blocks attached to posts pivoted at their lower ends and connected above the drum by a link and bell-crank lever, which is actuated either by a steam cylinder, or by a pedal, acting through levers and links.
