Fittings for exteriors of buildings; weightactuated lowering-apparatus.-Comprises apparatus in which a cage provided with automatic brakes of the kind described in Specification 4273/09 runs on guides carried by either an extensible fire-escape ladder or an overhead carriage movable along the front of a building. The ladder, Figs. 1 and 2, is formed with arms 2, 4, between which guide-ropes 1 are stretched by drums 3. The cage 10 has a movable floor 13, which is connected to a rod 17 and the hoisting-rope 15. Toggle-lever brakes 12 enclose the guide-ropes and are normally held off, against the action of a spring 26, by a lever 24 connected to the hoisting- rope. When the rope breaks or is released, any pressure on the cage floor ensures the rod 17 being pulled downwards to allow the brakes to be applied and stop the cage. When the ladder is collapsed, the arms 4, which are pivoted, are folded over upon it. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the guide-ropes are suspended from a carriage 35 which can be traversed along a rail 33 by ropes 42 wound in opposite directions on a drum 3. The guide-ropes are weighted at 39 and are kept apart by a bar 41 which rests on buffer springs 40.
