8502. Perognat, P. April 10, 1912, [Convention date]. Disk and wheel apparatus.-A machine for grinding the r o u g h forged blades of knives, swords, razors, surgical instruments, &c. comprises a pair of grinding-wheels 1, one only of which is shown, mounted on either side of, and movable towards and from, the blade-carrier which is carried on a slide 36. The bladecarrier moves to-and-fro longitudinally between the grinders, and carries templets which cooperate with the grinder slides to cause the grinders to shape the knife-blade. The bladecarrier receives its longit u d i n a l movement through a link 42 from a wheel 44 clutched to the driving-shaft 10 by moving a lever 59, and also receives an upward vertical movement by the raising of its guide 39 through a rack 84, which may be coupled through gear with the shaft 10 by raising a lever 91; on the completion of this upward movement, the lever 91 is automatically released. The blade-holder mounted on the slide 36 comprises a doublesided block to take two knives, which are held against the block by hooks engaging the bolsters and a wedge pressed down between the loose tang ends. By placing a shaped blade in the templet holder and a rough block in the blade-holder, templets may be produced to enable a blade of any shape to be copied.
