16,378. Greenwood, R. July 16. Operating doors by screw-and-nut mechanism and by weights.-Mechanism for opening and closing ships' watertight doors which permits instantaneous closing in an emergency consists of a divided shaft, to the lower part of which the door is attached, and a separate screwed shaft which raises and lowers a member which, normally, is operatively connected to the divided shaft but which, by a partial turn of the upper part of the divided shaft, is disconnected therefrom to allow the door to close by gravity. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the upper and lower parts c, c1 of the divided shaft c', c are connected by a member f fixed to the upper part and swivelly connected to the lower part. A forked member j, Fig. 3, carrying a nut j2 for operation by the screwed shaft k normally embraces the member f between the flanges h, h1 and is operatively connected to it by the engagement of lugs i, i1 with the flange h. The flange h is provided with notches, which, by turning the shaft c, are adapted to register with the lugs i, i1 to disconnect the members f and j and allow the door to fall.. The shaft c is squared and is turned by a member t, Fig. 2, operated by a lever o through a link r and swivel block s. Several doors may be released from a single lever o, and by suitable gearing the release may be effected from the bridge. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the member f to which, by means of rods 6, the lower part c1 of the divided shaft is connected, is slidably mounted on the upper shaft c which is turned by a lever 9.
