Converters. - Relates to a combined cupola and steel converter arranged to be divided at a line h, h', when required, into two parts which can be tilted separately or together. The cupola b can be raised and lowered with respect to the converter a by means of screws i bearing on journals j connected with rollers m and working in slots k2 in guides k. The cupola is tilted by means of gearing r', r2, r5, q' and pinions p2, p3 moving over racks p, p', the rollers m moving over corresponding guides n. The converter a is tilted by means of gearing u1, u, t, and, by engaging a clutch s, the cupola and converter can be tilted simultaneously in opposite directions with the aid of gearing r4, r3, r, r6, q. Blast is supplied from a pipe c to the cupola through a pipe e, and to the converter through a pipe d5, box x, and tuyeres y, valves v, w being provided. A tap-hole a1 is provided for use when converting small quantities of steel.
