Cleaners for mechanically removing incrustation.-Apparatus for cleaning iron and other surfaces such as the sides and bottoms of ships, of the kind which is self-propelled and is provided with steering-mechanism to retain the apparatus in the line of travel, is held to the work by the reaction of a jet of water. A main brush 2 and smaller brushes 19 are mounted within a frame 3 provided with rollers 13, 15 which bear against the surface, the brushes and rollers being driven by an electric or compressedair motor 4 as described in Specification 27,521/12. A pump 1, also driven by the motor, ejects water from the interior of the apparatus in a direction at right-angles to the surface; or water may be supplied to the jet from an external source such as a hose. The raising, lowering, steering and scraping apparatus are as described in the above-mentioned Specification.
