Bell and gong signals; mechanical telegraphs.- The spring-controlled striker H of a bell can be depressed by a lug G' on a rocker having a second lug G engaged by a tongue B' on an arm B, which is loosely pivoted on, and rocks about, a shaft E. The tongue B', after turning through a sufficient angle, releases the lug G', and the bell is struck. When the arm B is returned the lug G is also returned by the tongue B' against the action of a spring-controlled plunger K, until it is again released ; it then takes up its normal position as shown. The arm B is controlled by a spring D and rests against a stop C until it is turned about the shaft E by a cord A. The number of rings given is recorded by a pointer E' integral with the shaft E. This shaft is turned with the wheel L by a pawl N, which engages teeth L' on the wheel and is pivoted on a member M slidably mounted on the arm B. The pawl is normally held against a stop-pin N' by its heavy tail N2. The checkpawl consists of a spring-carried roller P engaging between successive pairs of teeth L'. The pointer E' is returned to zero by a weight suspended on a string L2, when the knob M5 of the spring-controlled member M is pressed inwards so as to bring the pawl N out of engagement with the teeth L', and at the same time to press back the check-pawl roller P by an extension M' which engages the axle of the roller. The member M may, alternatively, be withdrawn by a flexible connexion M6 operated either by hand or automatically by the movement of the cage or the like. Two apparatus of the kind described may be mounted together, the pointers indicating on the same dial and the mechanism being located within and between the two bell-domes.
