26,201. Fearn, J. W. Nov. 15. Stapling, hand-tools for.-In a stapling tool or appliance of the type employing a continuous strip of formed staples, and applicable for fastening papers, attaching labels to boxes, &c., the staple strip is introduced into the magazine at the delivery or cutter end, and is automatically fed by a spring contained in the magazine. The frame of the appliance consists of a base b, a head c in which is mounted the spring- controlled cutting and driving plunger d, and a handle portion e. The base b is formed with a longitudinal recess f1, Fig. 3, which, with the bar f2 fitted therein, constitutes the staple magazine, the staple strip i, Fig. 2, resting on the part f3 of the bar j2 with the legs of the staples depending in the lateral recesses f'. The staple strip is urged towards the cutters g1, g2 by the spring j, which is connected at its rear end to a pin or stop j3, and carries at its forward end a feed-plunger j4; the head j5 of this plunger is accominodated by the grooves j1, j2 in the frame b and bar f2 respectively, and bears against the rear end of the staple strip. The bar f2 may be of hardened steel, and adapted at its forward end to form a shearing-cutter coacting with the cutter g1; but, preferably, it is provided with a detachable cutter g2. The forward staple, after being severed from the strip by the depression of the plunger d, is forced by the plunger through the guiding-throat m1 into the work. For fastening papers &c., the appliance is provided with a bed-plate n having clinching recesses n2. The frame b at its rear end is detachably pivoted to the bed-plate, for example by spring-pressed ball pivots q2, so that the appliance can be used without the bed-plate for stapling boxes &c. The forward end of the magazine is normally closed by a stop k mounted, under control of a spring k1, in the head c. By means of the finger-piece k3, the stop can be raised clear of the entrance of the magazine, to enable this to be recharged. In a modification, the feed-plunger j4 has a knob or finger-piece projecting laterally through a longitudinal slot in the base b. By pulling the knob &c. backwards and then turning it into a lateral notch or recess at the rear end, the feed-plunger can be latched in its retracted position during the charging of the magazine.
