Alkali compounds.-Feldspar or other potashbearing silicate rock is treated to render the potassium available for fertilizing purposes, by treating the rock with calcium oxide or car bonate and iron oxide, to obtain a fused or sintered product and to .form a complex silicate insoluble in water but decomposable by weak acid. The heating may be carried out in a blast furnace. Either ferrous oxide, or a mixture of ferric oxide and carbon may be used. The product may be treated with weak acids to separate potash and alumina.
