Securing handles on shafts.-Operating-handles for calculating and similar machines are removably connected to their spindles by means comprising tension springs normally keeping the connecting means in driving relationship. In a boss 10 in the handle 8 is placed a sleeve 11 connected to the handle by a spring 15 and formed with deep slots 21 adapted to engage a pin 22 in the spindle 20. A disk 23, shaped as shown in Fig. 5, is secured on the spindle in such a position that the handle 8 and sleeve 11 may be slid on the spindle with the pin 22 engaging the slots 21 till lugs 30, 31 on the handle, with radial ends 32, 33, may be passed through notches 28, 29 in the disk 23 when the handle is turned to put the spring 15 in tension, into the position shown in Fig. 3. When the handle is released, it is turned by the spring until the lugs 30, 31 engage the surfaces 26, 27 of the disk 23 to transmit the drive from the handle to the spindle, when the ends 32, 33 engage the surfaces 24, 25 and prevent axial withdrawal of the handle.
