16,921. Marks, E. C. R., [Addometer Corporation]. Dec. 1. Adding-apparatus with operating m e a n s.-Consists in improvements in yielding means for connecting the operating handle with the main shaft, and also for holding the handle in its displaced position until the corresponding movement of the main shaft is complete. The operating-handle is fixed on a spindle 24, which also carries a segment 26 constituting, together with a pawl 28, an ordinary full-stroke mechanism. A pitman 3 is hinged to a crank 2 on a spindle co-axial with the spindle 24, and is connected by springs 31 with a bar 30 pivoted to the segment 26. The pitman serves to oscillate the main operating-shaft 5-, the connexion being by a slot 11 which embraces a crankpin 10. Two arms 8 on the shaft 5 carry a universal bar 9, which holds down the rack and type plates 6 against the action of springs 7. The bar 30 is formed with slots 33, 35 to embrace pins 32, 36 respectively on the pitman 3 and on a plate 38 engaging the crank-pin 10 by a slot 39. This plate is joined to the bar 30 by springs 52, 53, which are weak compared with the springs 31, and to the side plate 1 by main springs 45, 46 to return the mechanism to normal position. If the handle and bar 30 are drawn forward quickly, the pitman 3 will follow until the rear end of the slot 11 encounters the pin 10, whereupon the resistance of the mechanism moved by the shaft 5 will stretch the springs 31, the slot 33 moving over the pin 32. The springs 52, 53 will also stretch until the slot 35 has moved over the pin 36, whereupon the plate 38 will be drawn along, extending springs 45, 46; this condition is shown in Fig. 6. The pitman then continues to follow the bar 30 under the tension of the springs 31 until the pin 32 encounters the front of the slot 33. A pitman 15, Fig. 3, similar to the pitman 3, moves in unison with it, being connected to a crank 12 on the shaft 5 by a pin and slot 13, 14. In order to avoid vibration of the pitmen owing to the opposing springs, a cam 16 pivoted at 17 is moved by a pin 20 on the pitman 15 engaging a slot 19 in the cam, so that its edge 22, which is suitably shaped, continually bears on the crank-pin 13. After the operating-handle is drawn forward fully, in order to prevent its return until the motion of the mechanism is complete, a pawl 57 rocking on a lever 54 engages behind a projection 60 on the segment 26. The lever 54 and pawl 57 are so proportioned and pivoted that the pawl cannot rock to release thesegment 26 without depression of the rear end of the lever 54, which is prevented by a shoulder 63 on a lever 61 pivoted at 62. On completion of the operation a pin 65 on the pitman 3 rocks the lever 61, thus allowing the springs 45, 46 to return the parts to their initial positions.
