Catch-gear and like safety retaining mechanism. -In a safety device for hoists, an eye-bolt B engaged by the lifting-shackle A carries a plate D in which are pivotally mounted arms H normally held against the plate in an horizontal position by the flange C, these arms being connected at one end to the chains J which support the cage, and at the other end having gripping-devices M which engage the guide-ropes L when the arms are released by the breaking of the hoisting-rope.
