Brick, pottery, and like kilns.-A substantially open chamber is arranged below the perforated floor of the kiln chamber, and heating gases are supplied thereto by a plurality of flues running concentric with, or parallel to, the outer wall of .the kiln, each flue receiving its gases from a plurality of fire-grates. In a circular kiln as shown in cross section, there are two annular flues c, c1 surmounted by perforated channel bricks through which the gases pass to the open chamber b below the perforated floor of the kiln. The two annular flues are connected by radial passages, not shown, and the outer is connected by radial passages with chambers h in the outer wall of the kiln, with which the fire-holes (not shown) also communicate. A central downdraught outlet flue j, or an updraught chimney, is provided. The chambers h may have controlled openings at the top leading to the kiln chamber. In a rectangular kiln, two parallel flues replace the annular flues, and the fire-holes are at the ends, two at one end and three at the other, the central firehole of the three having a branched outlet to both flues.
