Fibrous plastic compositions.-A wood substi tute is moulded from a composition consisting of a fibrous filler, such as asbestos or saw dust and a composite binder, previously prepared, consisting of a mixture of a soluble silicate and Portland slag, natural or other cement, containing a substantial proportion of calcium oxide. The weight of the binder is preferably greater than that of the filler, and the percentage of water in which the soluble silicate is dissolved should preferably be that required to set and harden the cement. The moulded mass is then left at the ordinary temperature or at a temperature up to 100‹ F., and may then be subjected to a gradually rising temperature to assist the separation of the water from the soluble silicate and its combination with the cement. The moulded article is finally soaked in water to dissolve out free alkali which is associated with the alkali silicate. As an example, 30 parts by weight of fibre are mixed with 10-40 parts of cement and 60-30 parts of soluble silicate. Specification 1390/12 is referred to.
