119,418. Poilvache, C., and Strauven, M. J. J. May 6, 1918. Stapling and discontinuous wire-stitching. - A stapling or wire-stitching machine is provided with a head in which various sized cutting and shaping and driving tools can be readily substituted. The head comprises front and rear plates A, B, Fig. 2, secured together by screws C, the rear plate being provided with a groove E in which slide a driver bar G and a cutting and shaping tool F. The tool F, Fig. 4, has screwed to its lower end an extension F1, which slides in a groove D, Fig. 2, in the front plate A, and two staple-forming projections F3, Fig. 4, which are slightly countersunk in the tool to prevent lateral play; one of the projections F3 is formed with a knife edge F5. The driver bar G, Fig. 2, has a driver G' secured to its lower end bv screws G2 so as to be flush with the bar, the driver being of just sufficient width to slide between the projection F3. The driver bar carries pins G3, G6 which slide in slots E1, F6 in the plate B and the tool F respectively, and near its upper end has secured to it a spring-pressed detent H normally in contact with the upper end of the tool F but adapted to be displaced by the engagement of an extension H2 with a cam surface J on the plate A. This plate has screwed to it a spring L to which an anvil M is secured by screws M1; a groove M2 is formed in the front face of the anvil to receive the wire N. In operation, the tool F is moved downwards with the driver bar G to cut the wire and bend it about the anvil, after which a cam surface on the extension F' engages a rounded portion M3 of the anvil and presses the latter outwards, leaving the staple held between the projections F3. The detent H is then tripped by engagement with the plate A, and the driver bar G moves relatively to the tool F to drive tho staple into the work. Plates K, O, secured by screws to the plate B, take the wear of the projections F3 and the driver G1. By releasing the screws C, the plate A, B may be, separated to enable the projections F3, driver G, and anvil M, to be changed for driving staples of a different size.
