March 26, 1918 Concrete vessels; composite vessels; frames and framing.-Ships, pontoons, barges, and other structures are built wholly or mainly by means of preferably standardized metal frames having their sides angular in cross-section and of such contour that when assembled edge to edge they interlock or key together and their junctions break joint in directions at right angles to each other. The frames a are preferably of cruciform, T, or L shape, and may be filled in with reinforced or other concrete, wood, wood pulp, sheet metal, or metal plates before or after assembly. In ship construction, stringers, webs, bulkheads, decks, tank tops, girders, casings, hatches, &c. may also be built of the frames, some of which may be angled or curved. When the frames are initially filled with concrete, spaces are left to facilitate connexion of the frames as by steel dogs f, Fig. 4, and bolts, the spaces being afterwards filled with cement e2. Abutting edges may be grooved and tongued, rabetted or provided with coinciding grooves receiving fillets of oak &c. The flanges of the frames are extended where stringers, webs, keelsons, floors &c. are to be connected and the junctions between the stringers, webs, keelsons. &c. or of the plates or frames forming these members are placed so as not to coincide with junctions of the hull &c. frames. Bilges of ships, stringers, webs &c. may be formed of rectangular frames. At the stem and stern reinforcing frames of rods, Fig. 19, are placed in the concrete. The frames may be formed of cast steel or of electrically welded angle-bars, and adjacent frames may be welded together. The completed structure may be coated with cement mixed if desired with magnesite, asphalt, &c.
