125,003. Masterman, E. A. Aug. 14, 1918. Anchoring.-Lighter-than-air aircraft are moored to a mast by ropes attached to points symmetrically disposed on either side of the nose of the craft, the line joining the points preferably passing through the line of the resultant wind-pressure. As shown, the mast A has a crutch B fitted with winches C1. C2 from which the mooring ropes extend to a pair of " Parseval ring " attachments J1, J2 on the nose of the airship. A third Parseval ring " J3 is provided for the attachment of a rope K fastened to a winch C3 by which the craft is hauled into position for attaching the mooring ropes. The crutch may be of triangular girder form and may be mounted to rotate on the mast or, as shown, the mast may rotate with the crutch, being for this purpose mounted upon a ball-and-socket footstep bearing E, Fig. 5, and supported freely in a ring G to which the guys F are attached. To facilitate entrance of the nose of the craft into the crutch in rough weather, the mast may be swung about the bearing E or the crutch may be hinged to the mast so that the arms of the crutch may fall The mast may be of telescopic construction to permit of varying its height and in larger forms it may comprise two or more members carrying a platform on which is placed the mooring gear. The guy ropes may be dispensed with and the mast be designed as a cantilever pivoted at its lower end and provided with toothed segments engaged by gearing.
