Framework.-Girders, struts, stays, spars, ribs, &c. for aircraft and other purposes are composed of two pairs of longitudinals having each pair connected by diagonal braces, and a helical winding around the longitudinals. Figs. 1 and 2 show a girder comprising pairs of longitudinal members a, a1 connected by diagonal braces a2, at rightangles to which are arranged braces b2 connecting similar longitudinals b, b1, the whole being surrounded by strips d, d1 of plywood, or by aluminium strips or wire &c., wound in opposite directions. The windings d, d1 may be of circular, instead of the rectangular form shown. Fig. 5 shows a strut formed of longitudinals as connected by diagonal braces a3 and arranged at right-angles to a member composed of longitudinals f, f1 connected by a plywood web g. The helical winding passes over filling-pieces h, i at the front and rear edges. Veneer cappings j are also fitted, and the whole is covered with canvas and doped.
